Don’t buy food from strangers.

We are unsettled by the fact that we live in a country where the handful of corporations that control our food supply have a 3-P sustainability equation of profit, profit, profit. People and planet are rarely invited to the table unless, of course, they add to the profit. This is clearly problematic as you parallel the rise in factory-farmed, GMO-laden foods to pollution (surrounding factory-farmed areas) and obesity rates (across the nation). Is it our job at Spice change this system? No. We feed people for a living. But you can expect us to step on our soapbox to criticize it every so often. And take focused steps to circumvent it whenever we can. Many of us (particularly those reading this blog) are hip to the local food scene nowadays. Moonlighting

On any given Saturday, you might find Gina serving table side at Spice, discussing the flavor profile of our seasonal soup…or the bouquet of an old vine Zinfandel. And you might see Will smiling from behind the bar, or walking the parking lot on security detail. Last Sunday, however, they could both be found on guitar, rocking out The Happy Dog with their band Dead Sweaters.

Farm Planning via Email

Editor’s note: This entry is an email between Spice Owner/Chef Ben Bebenroth and new Spice Farm Manager Andrea Heim, detailing initial plans and goals for Spice Acres properties. The city gardens are located behind the parking lot of Spice Kitchen + Bar; the suburban gardens cover over 10,000 square feet of Ben’s backyard residence in Broadview Heights. Both properties, along with a few countryside acres leased from small farmers in our region, will supply the Spice kitchen throughout the year.
