Each week, fifty Spice Acres farm share members receive an informative and inspirational email from our farm manager, Shawn Belt. Here’s an excerpt from Week five, including an important reminder for those of us who strive to live happy, weed-free lives. Farm Update July is officially the start of hardcore summer weeding and this year is definitely not disappointing on that front.  Currently we are freeing our tomatoes, basil, and peppers from their unwelcome bedmates.  As we have been weeding we have been finding countless green tomatoes, pepper blossoms, and beautiful basil.  It is exciting to see what will be available soon at the farm.  Weeding is kind of like opening presents because you find plants that you forgot you had planted there.  There is a peace to be found in weeding, in the uncluttering of your rows.  The removal of unwanted plants allows you to clearly see what you … READ MORE

Turning Trash to Treasure: Composting Tips + Tricks

Spice Kitchen + Bar is on a mission. Not only do we prepare entrees and cocktails based on the seasons of our city, we aim to directly decrease our carbon footprint(s). How, you might ask? As the population increases around the world, so does our waste. More shoes, more food, more stuff. Of course we can recycle, reuse goods, buy vintage clothing, and so forth, but composting allows us to reduce waste and reconnect with the environment. At Spice, we’re moving forward in our most sustainable way. When every pepper has been pitted, every onion shelled, the scraps enter the compost pile behind the restaurant. So What? Composting is the controlled decomposition of organic matter. When you compost and use it as mulch in your garden, it naturally increases the organic matter in the earth’s soil. Growing in the snow.

Every day, inside our winter hoop houses, the spinach and lettuces freeze and come back to life. How hearty is that? Ben took these pictures of ice formations along the doors of this super cool microclimate. The patterns seem to resemble roots…don’t you think?
